Description of Zepbound
- Usage in Treatment: The recommended starting dosage for Zepbound is once weekly for four weeks. After this initial period, the dosage is usually increased to injected once weekly for another four weeks, assuming the medication is tolerated. This dose can then become a maintenance dose or can be further increased in increments (e.g., to ) based on efficacy and tolerability, with a maximum dose of once weekly.
- Mechanism: Like all Zepbound strengths, contains the active ingredient tirzepatide, a GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. It works by mimicking natural gut hormones to suppress appetite, enhance satiety (feeling full), and slow gastric emptying, leading to reduced calorie intake and weight loss.
- Form: It is a single-dose liquid solution () administered via a subcutaneous injection using a prefilled, disposable auto-injector pen or a single-dose vial.
- Side Effects: As the dose is increased from to , gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and vomiting may occur or intensify. These side effects often lessen over time.
